The Governor's Box was designed and created
by Robert Stewart in 1986, when the Illinois
Arts Council commissioned him to make a piece
for Governor James R. Thompson.  The piece
was presented to Thompson at the Governor's
Arts Awards in Springfield, Illinois.
In 1988, Governor Thompson commissioned
Stewart to make a replica of The Governor's
Box.  Later that year, the Governor was invited
to speak at the Politburo, where he presented
Stewart's piece to Mikhail Gorbachev.
